Interested students should contact the Computer Science Department (B237 Parkview Engineering Building: 269/276-3101) to obtain a Grade/Credit Authorization Form for the exam and information regarding payment procedures.

EXAM CONTENT

Part I:

1 1/2-hour written examination consisting of 125 multiple-choice questions covering fundamental computer concepts and terminology concerning software, utilities, operating systems, hardware, inputs, outputs, secondary storage, communications; connectivity, Internet browsers, multimedia, and computer privacy, security, ethics and environment.

Study all 9 chapters and the 6 Technology in Focus sections.

Part II:

2-1/2 hour "hands-on" proficiency examination covering working knowledge of the computer systems, including WMU WebMail, WestCat, Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2007 programs (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Integration).

PASS/FAIL CRITERIA

Students must score an average grade of 70 % for both parts of the examination to receive credit for CS1050. The individual scores on each of each (Part I and II) must be 60 % or higher in order to qualify for a passing grade of 70%.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  1. 1. Students should contact the Computer Science Department (B237 of the Parkview Engineering Building: 269/276-3101) to obtain an application form for the exam and information regarding payment procedures.
  2. Students will be allowed one chance to pass this examination. It may not be retaken.  Students registered in CS 1000 at the time of taking the exam or students who have previously attempted CS1000 and received a failing grade may not take this examination.
  3. Passing this examination will satisfy the WMU computer literacy requirement. Three hours of credit will be awarded for passing the CS 1050 exam, but these credits do not satisfy a General Education Area VII requirement.
  4. Students should bring number 2 pencils and an eraser for the examination. Other materials (CDs and paper) will be provided.
  5. This examination will be limited to the first twenty (20) students who register for the exam and return the stamped PAID application form to the Department of Computer Science.
  6. Students must bring a valid WMU picture ID to the exam. Also, be sure your WMU Unified student email account is active for use when you come to take the exam.
  7. Examinees will be asked to sign a form agreeing to accept the results of the exam, regardless of whether they have or have not studied the above suggested text materials.
